Molecular effects in the ionization of N2, O2, and F2 by intense laser fields

چکیده
In this paper we study the response in time of N2, O2, and F2 to laser pulses having a wavelength of 390 nm. We find single-ionization suppression in O2 and its absence in F2, in accordance with experimental results at l=800 nm. Within our framework of time-dependent density functional theory we are able to explain deviations from the predictions of intense-field many-body S-matrix theory sIMSTd. We confirm the connection of ionization suppression with destructive interference of outgoing electron waves from the ionized electron orbital. However, the prediction of ionization suppression, justified within the IMST approach through the symmetry of the highest occupied molecular orbital sHOMOd, is not reliable since it turns out that—e.g., in the case of F2—the electronic response to the laser pulse is rather complicated and does not lead to dominant depletion of the HOMO. Therefore, the symmetry of the HOMO is not sufficient to predict ionization suppression. However, at least for F2, the symmetry of the dominantly ionized orbital is consistent with the nonsuppression of ionization.

Theory of Gas Ionization by Intense Electromagnetic Fields
The distribution function of the electrons produced in the interaction between an intense electromagnetic wave and a neutral gas is derived and is shown to be nonequilibrium and anisotropic. By assuming that the time scale of gas ionization is much greater than the field period, it is shown that the electron distribution function formed in microwave and optical discharges has sharp anisotropy a...
متن کاملPost ionization alignment of the fragmentation of molecules in an ultrashort intense laser field
We studied the angular distributions of the fragmented ions of diatomic molecules in an intense linearly polarized short laser pulse. In addition to the well-known dynamic alignment of the neutral molecules before ionization, we identified a more important post ionization alignment effect of the molecular ions. The latter is modelled quantum mechanically as resulting from the breakup of a rotat...
متن کاملEffects of orbital symmetries in dissociative ionization of molecules by few-cycle laser pulses
We have measured angular distributions of ion fragments produced in dissociative double ionization of CO, CO2, and C2H2 by intense ultrashort laser pulses. This report extends similar recent studies of O2 and N2 to a wider set of molecules. We found that for sub-10-fs pulses of sufficiently low intensity the fragments’ angular distributions for all studied molecules are determined by angular de...
متن کاملInactivation of Gram-Negative Bacteria by Low-Pressure RF Remote Plasma Excited in N2-O2 Mixture and SF6 Gases
The role of low-pressure RF plasma in the inactivation of Escherichia coli O157, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, and Enterobacter sakazakii using N2-O2 and SF6 gases was assessed. 1×109 colony-forming units (CFUs) of each bacterial isolate were placed on three polymer foils. The effects of pressure, power, distance from the source, and exposure time to plasma gases were optimized. The...
متن کاملIonization of N2 , O2, and linear carbon clusters in a strong laser pulse
Multiphoton ionization of linear molecules is studied using the strong-field S-matrix approach. Numerical calculations for the angular distribution and the energy spectrum of the photoelectron as well as the total ionization rates and yields in an intense linearly polarized laser pulse are performed. Results are obtained for molecules aligned along the polarization axis and for ensembles of mol...
